  5.  WHAT CAN TREECHART DO FOR YOU?
  6.     
  7.  TreeChart is a comprehensive Windows package for preparing
  8.  Organization Charts or illustrating other hierarchical (or
  9.  nearly hierarchical) information. No drawing skills are
  10.  required: box sizing, positioning, alignment and the
  11.  routing of connecting lines is all done automatically
  12.  whenever you make a change.
  13.  
  14.  The package offers a wide choice of chart styles, box
  15.  shapes, shadows and line routing options. Full color and
  16.  font support. A border and titles can also be added.
  17.  
  18.  For Company Organization Charts, it automatically
  19.  positions and connects boxes you indicate as being
  20.  assistants or shared employees.
  21.  
  22.  TreeChart assists you in achieving consistent-looking
  23.  charts with Layouts. Layouts control how boxes look, and
  24.  how they connect to boxes below them. You can define any
  25.  number of Layouts; when you change a Layout, it
  26.  automatically affects every box using the Layout. Layouts
  27.  are like style guides found in more sophisticated word
  28.  processors. When you add a box it will initially use the
  29.  Layout you select as most likely needed, given its position
  30.  in the chart.

  32.  Layouts, default Layouts and other chart settings can be
  33.  saved as Template Files. Preparing one chart is easy;
  34.  preparing further similar charts is easier still. Using
  35.  Templates, you can import text from another program and
  36.  produce attractive charts almost instantly!

  38.  TreeChart offers outlining facilities, to let you view only
  39.  parts of your chart, and hide the rest of it. You can view,
  40.  change or print the whole chart, certain levels of
  41.  management, or just single departments.

  43.  If you wish, TreeChart will automatically scale your chart
  44.  to fit on a single sheet of paper. You can also preview
  45.  printing.

  47.  TreeChart will import text (and automatically create boxes)
  48.  from other Windows programs, and can export text or fully-
  49.  scaleable WMF pictures. Pasting pictures into word
  50.  processor documents and resizing them is simple.

  53.  full context-sensitive help and sample charts.

  56.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  57.  
  58.  TreeChart requires a PC-compatible running Windows 3.1 or
  59.  better. IT WILL NOT RUN UNDER WINDOWS 3.0.

  61.  A mouse is not required, but is recommended. A small
  62.  number of non-essential operations are unavailable
  63.  without a mouse. Details in Appendix 2 of the User Guide.

  65.  Use of TrueType fonts, or comparable third-party font
  66.  technology such as Adobe Type Manager is highly
  67.  recommended. Section 3.1.15 of the User Guide goes into
  68.  more detail on these issues.

  71.  ONLINE DOCUMENTATION

  73.  The TreeChart User Guide (TREECHRT.WRI) and Tutorial
  74.  (TUTORIAL.WRI) are both in Windows Write format. If you
  75.  feel the need to print these documents, be warned that
  76.  they total about 170 pages, and are formatted for using
  77.  a 9" by 7" region of an A4 page.

  79.  Additionally, TreeChart has full online help using the
  80.  standard Windows Help facility. This file is TREECHRT.HLP.

  82.  The file SAMPLES.TXT describes the sample charts included
  83.  in the package.

  85.  A quick way to view any of these is to use the Windows
  86.  File Manager, and double-click on the file name.

  88.  Section 2.1 of the User Guide contains a list of all files
  89.  included in the TreeChart release.

  92.  WHAT IS SHAREWARE?
  93.  
  94.  TreeChart is not free. It is not public domain. Just like
  95.  a program costing ten times as much, it is copyrighted by
  96.  its owners, and you must purchase a license to use it.

  98.  Unlike a program costing ten times as much, you have a
  99.  chance to try the program before you commit yourself to
  100.  purchasing the license. This 'try before you buy' concept
  101.  is termed Shareware.
  102.  
  103.  We are granting you a limited-time trial use license to
  104.  evaluate this program to determine if it meets your needs.
  105.  If, after 30 days, you wish to continue using this program
  106.  you must purchase a full license for continued use. If you
  107.  continue using this program beyond the 30 day trial use
  108.  license we have granted, you are doing so without a
  109.  license. This is illegal.

  113.  Purchasing a full license is termed 'Registering the
  114.  program'. Registration brings many benefits over and above
  115.  the right to continue using the program.

  121.  REGISTRATION: PRICES AND PROCEDURES

  123.  From the Help menu, choose Register. The Registration
  124.  dialog box allows you to see our prices, and allows you
  125.  to print a pro-forma invoice / order form.

  127.  The basic price is US$42 or STG£27.56. To this must be
  128.  added postage (varies) & (for E.C. customers) VAT.
  129.  Credit card (Visa / Mastercard) orders are accepted.

  137.  INSTALLATION & DE-INSTALLATION
  138.  
  139.  Simply create a new directory on you hard disk, then copy
  140.  all of TreeChart's files into it. No further installation
  141.  is needed.
  142.  
  143.  TreeChart can be run directly from a floppy disk, but
  144.  you'd have to leave the disk in while TreeChart was
  145.  running, and performance would suffer.

  151.  GETTING STARTED
  152.  
  153.  One quick way of starting TreeChart is to use the Windows
  154.  File Manager, and double-click on TREECHRT.EXE. Section
  155.  2.4 of the User Guide describes a number of other ways
  156.  of starting the program.
  157.  
  158.  Pressing F1 will present Help on what to do with that
  159.  intimidating blank window. Section 2.5 of the User Guide
  160.  and section 1.4 of the Tutorial both describe the various
  161.  other ways of getting online help.

  163.  We recommend that you prepare your first chart by working
  164.  through the tutorial.

  167.  CHANGES SINCE VERSION 1.00
  168.  
  169.  Changes since v1.00 fall into three categories:
  170.  
  171.     1.  Faults Fixed
  172.     2.  Things that work differently
  173.     3.  New features
  174.  
  175.  The changes listed here range from very minor to very
  176.  major. We aim to identify all changes, since sometimes
  177.  things that seem very minor to us are really irritating
  178.  for you.
  179.  
  180.  NOTE: The .TCF file format used by v1.10 is basically
  181.  identical to that used by v1.00. Any charts you have saved
  182.  using v1.00 can be opened by v1.10. Some new features take
  183.  default settings. If you save a chart using v1.10, then
  184.  open it in v1.00 the new features are ignored. If you then
  185.  save it under v1.00 some of the settings associated with
  186.  the new features may be lost.

  188.  FAULTS FIXED
  189.  ============
  190.  
  191.   1. The Define Layouts dialog incorrectly had two default
  192.      buttons. Now it only has one.
  193.  
  194.   2. In the Edit Layout dialog and the Edit Border Layout
  195.      dialog, hiding a text field (or selecting a hidden
  196.      text field) incorrectly disabled (grayed) the Text
  197.      group control. This no longer happens.
  198.  
  199.   3. In the Edit Border Layout dialog, certain text/margin
  200.      selections could result in a zero-sized sample, making
  201.      it impossible to see the background color. The sample
  202.      is now always drawn large enough to see the background
  203.      color.
  204.  
  205.   4. Under some circumstances, the program scrolled the
  206.      display, then immediately redrew the whole screen.
  207.      This unnecessary 'double-refresh' is now avoided.
  208.  
  209.   5. If you double-clicked on a box that was partially
  210.      off-screen, the box was scrolled into view, but the
  211.      double-click was 'lost'. Now its not.
  212.  
  213.   6. If you CTRL+clicked on a box that
